What are Trump Accounts?

4 Minute Read

Trump Accounts are new, federal tax-advantaged, IRA-style investment accounts for U.S. citizen children under 18, designed to build long-term wealth through early investments. Established under the 2025 “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” they feature a $1,000 federal seed contribution for eligible children born between 2025-2028 and allow up to $5,000 in annual contributions. For more information, visit: https://trumpaccounts.gov/. Opening an account even if you never fund it, can still benefit your child with the $1,000 initial deposit. Future donor contributions can still be accepted.

What can I do with a Trump Account?

  • Every American child born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 can apply to get $1000 added to their investment account.
  • Family contributions are not tax‑deductible, although employers & donors may receive a deduction.
  • No contributions are necessary, but you can deposit up to $5000 per year to maximize growth.
  • Anyone can contribute up to the annual limit (e.g. family, employers, donors).

How to set up a Trump Account

You can apply for an account by filling out form 4547. This form can be filed with the parent’s tax return or by itself.

Future Withdrawals

The account is fully in the child’s name, with a parent being the sole custodian until they turn 18.

  • Funds become available to the child at 18 years old.
  • Penalty‑free uses at age 18 include education, buying a home, or starting a business.
  • Withdrawals are taxable.

Donor Programs

  • If you do not qualify for the $1,000 initial deposit, donor programs exist, but details are limited.
  • For example, the Dell family pledged $250 to the first 25M children under 10 that live in certain zip codes and did not qualify for the initial government deposit.
